Mexico City, Jul 14 (AFP) Mexican authorities seized USD 11.5 million in cash hidden in a truck carrying strawberries at a customs checkpoint near the US border, officials said today.

The stash was concealed in 306 packages wrapped with black and found Sunday in San Emeterio, Sonora state, after a gamma-ray scanner found "a variation" in the cargo, the defense ministry said in a statement.

The seizure was conducted by the army and border agents at the customs checkpoint south of the Arizona city of Lukeville. Some 600 bullets of various caliber were also found in the truck.

The statement did not say whether the truck was coming or going to the United States. The driver was handed over to prosecutors.

Drug cartels regularly ship weapons and cash from their drug proceeds into Mexico from the United States.

Most driving, around the town od Guanajuato is done underground, for lack space for roads above ground, so you have to plan ahead where you want to pop out..

The article says the cash was seized near the US border. Then it says the cash was found at a customs checkpoint at San Emeterio by a gamma-ray scanner. It appears San Emeterio is by Caborca, right?? Then it says the cash was seized at the checkpoint just south of Lukeville. Huh? Then it says they didn't know whether the truck was coming or going to the U.S. WHAT? Then it says cartels regularly ship weapons and cash from their drug proceeds into Mexico from the United States. Now I'm really confused. I think they ate too many of the gamma-ray scanned strawberries and don't know whether they are coming or going.

I wager the guy who put those 600 rounds of ammo the scanner picked up On in the trailer is dead by now.

The strawberries were probably not from the U.S., San Quintin, Baja Calfornia has lots of Strawberry growers. it was probably money and bullets already on the Mexican side waiting for a ride south..The load if it was from the U.S. would have come in most likely, at one of the Baja ports, Lukeville/ Sonoyta won't let any commercial agriculture thru that port... They got rid of the the inspectors back in the late 1990's..
