If this is happening in Colorado Springs what about RP's future?

More than a third of the streetlights in Colorado Springs will go dark Monday. The police helicopters are for sale on the Internet. The city is dumping firefighting jobs, a vice team, burglary investigators, beat cops — dozens of police and fire positions will go unfilled.

The parks department removed trash cans last week, replacing them with signs urging users to pack out their own litter.

Neighbors are encouraged to bring their own lawn mowers to local green spaces, because parks workers will mow them only once every two weeks. If that. Water cutbacks mean most parks will be dead, brown turf by July; the flower and fertilizer budget is zero.

Casinos are the answer for Sandy beach

AZ Indian Gambling revenues annually contribute around $200 MILLION+ to the AZ State General Fund per prior agreement between the State of AZ & the Tribes. Most of the $$$ from the tribes go to AZ Education

Are you kidding me? I remember what a hard decision it was for some of my friends that are in the trades to pick between Colorado Springs and las Vagas, when looking for a sure thing good paying job. That town was boooming for some time.

I'm not so sure I would like to see casinos down there. Isn't the condo explosion enough? I'm referring to the explosion years ago, not now, but it will come back. Even if the casinos did think about building, I can't imagine the kind of red tape and politics that would be involved to do such. I remember back in the day when one could drive down the beach from whale hill all the way to the Playa Del Oro trailer campground. Those days are obviously long gone, but you have to ask yourself, what if?? I know local revenue is a key part to the community there, and I wish I contributed more, but there must be another way to generate local income.

There are already Three casino type operations in Penasco. Black Dog is giving away food to players. Two other operations down the street are packed all the time. Mostly locals.

Jerry, I think your underlying point is very scary and is my biggest fear for Penasco now and over the next couple years. How effectively will the "city" manage civil services over the next few years? What pressures will they be under, what agendas will be influencing their budgeting process, and how will they manage maintaining the infrastructure?

They already have approval from the Mexican government for a large, international style "Monte Carlo" type casino. There was a fairly big deal made about this a few years ago. Of course, that's before the economy and condo market went belly-up and the dream of becoming a cruise ship destination more or less evaporated.

Right now, casinos in Rocky Point are not going to draw AZ tourists. Any of us in Phoenix can drive a few miles in most any direction and feed the one-armed bandits and lose money until we're broke. Why would anyone drive 4 hours over the border to do that?

Personally, I pretty much stopped going to the Black Dog once they added the slot machines. Changed the whole character of the place.

I'm with bringitbig...I don't much like the empty streets and the people being on what my wife calls 'suvival mode' but a real casino would destroy more of what I have come to love about Penasco. I hurts to see the people struggling now that our tourist dollars aren't making it there. R.P. had a differtent vibe this time around, felt odd. Hope things pick up soon...

• The distribution of negative equity is heavily concentrated in five states: Nevada (65 percent), which had the highest percentage negative equity, followed by Arizona (48 percent), Florida (45 percent), Michigan (37 percent) and California (35 percent). Among the top five states, the average negative equity share was 40 percent, compared to 14 percent for the remaining states. In numerical terms, California (2.4 million) and Florida (2.0 million) had the largest number of negative equity mortgages accounting for 4.4 million or 42 percent of all negative equity loans

48 per cent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we are so screwed Hey maybe a new marketing idea:

Casinos aren't the answer. Indian casino revenue is way down in Arizona, slots especially, and I heard Vegas hasn't been doing too well either (and they're at 13% unemployment BTW). I don't know why anyone goes to an Indian casino as paybacks are so low. I'll stick to craps in Laughlin with a low table buyin and I've got a fighting chance.

I'm all for moving to RP in the near future, but we are married to our house. Glad we didn't get caught up in the re finance or a 2nd or 3rd mortgages. Just a little while longer to become an ex-patriot !
