Internet Access while traveling in Mexico

GV sez: First...What do you plan on doing? Are you just going to browse the net and do e-mails? Are you going to download movies, like your usual porn things. etc?IPads are really great, if you want to spend $600.00+. Kindles are pretty good also and not that expensive. Best Buy has a good deal going on a Dell, 15.6"Lap top with enough stuff do do most tasks. $295.00 +/- Not for gaming, etc. I just purchased a $175.00 Android Tablet. So far, so good. Does internet, e-mails and will download movies, etc. Good picture. I'll show it to you when I get there. The biggest problem you will have travelling is getting the internet connection. Most hotels will have it, many campgrounds in the US will have it, but I can't speak to traveling through Mexico. In Mexico, I have used a Telcel Amigo USB Modem and it has been acceptable. It works off of any Telcel 3G signal and Iget decent reception in Lost Concsious down on the beach. For your purpose you can get about 3 Gigs for approx $39.00 US for 30 days. If you run throughit you just "Top Off" on line. Downloading movies isn't too big a drain but video streaming will wipe you out right now. Just about any place you get a phone signal, you can hook up to the internet with that modem.Just to throw some stuff into the game, I have purchased an AT & T MIFI Hot spot with a Telcel SIM card. I can hook up up to five devices on it wirelesslyat one time. Telcel does sell MIFI Modems at that central store. They also sell the USB Modems. When I get down there, I'll show you this stuff and run youthrough the process. Sounds confusing, but actually pretty simple. What I'm saying is basically that when you're travelling in the US, you should easily get WIFI..Hotels, Big Macs, Starbucks, etc. Mexico will be more of a challenge.

Jerry: I have a Kindle that I have not yet fired up. I did not know you could e-mail with it. So that might do the trick completely for me. I have a cheapie pay as you go phone for the US leg of the trip but it will not work in Mexico, but I can call here from the US (No texting) on it and even set up a local Mexican phone number for people here to call me in the US at no charge.

GV: I want internet browsing for news, e-mail capabilities and that's about it. No movies for me and no large downloads necessary. I am not concerned about internet acces in the US as I will not be up there long. Yes Tel Cel is probably the only game in town. I am sure many of the camp grounds will offer WiFi but i hope to avoid campgrounds and tourist location as much as possible. Love to hear about your set up.

Jerry can probably tell you more about the Kindle than I, but I think if it's the original Kindle it's just an e-reader. If it is the Kindle Fire I believe you can do most everythingon it. That's a SWAG on my part. You will need to see a coverage map for TelCel to see where you can get it. I know I get it as soon as I hit Sonoyta and most of the way into RP.

19 ft class B, Roadtrek Versatile. Dodge 318 V8. Drove it over I-10 to NM on that flat windy streatch and it was fine on the road in the wind. Low profile and park anywhere. Reminds me of my much beloved VW Westy but roomier with genny, toilet and shower.
Thinking about a small scooter hanging off the back.

Dog, that place on MIracle Mile next to the recycling place is where I bought it and it is a second or third generation run old timey joint. You know it the minute you step inside the shop. Very nice people to.

Kenny: The 318 also gets decent gas milage to boot. It ran nice at 75 and 80 into a headwind on I-10. Would have been in second or third gear in the Westy !!
