Lovin it in RP!
Evangelina what a song! I never heard it before but I loved it immediately. Linda Ronstadt in the background Hoyt Axton singing about his love. I was 12 years old when they sang this.

Thank you for the link - in all the years of coming to Penasco never heard the song. Apparently, Hoyt Axton's cousin, Arlo Guthrie, also sang the song and he mentions that Hoyt wrote it. I wonder if Hoyt actually came down here at some time - Penasco sure wasn't on most maps at the time it was written lol

Well.......... I have some info on that........... I actually met Evangelina in 1975. She was real and Hoyt did come down there to visit her..... When I met her she was the head madam at the Crystal Palace..... It was a very interesting visit, to say the least.......

I have it on CD if you all want it. I was 15 in '72 when I first heard the song..... What a great memory.....

Evangelina, Great tune!

Ronnie McCoury did a fine rendition Bluegrass style a few years back. Sang it in Scottsdale just a few weeks ago.

EVANGELINA

And I dream in the morning she brings me water
I dream in the evening she brings me wine
Just a poor man's daughter from Puerto Penasco
Evangelina in old Mexico

There's a great hot desert south of the border
And if you don't take water you better not go
Tequila won't get you across that desert
To Evangelina in old Mexico

And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane
Knowin' she's waitin' and I can't get there
God only knows that I wracked my brain to try and find a way
To reach that woman in old Mexico

And I met a kind man he guarded the border
He said "You don't need papers I'll let you by
I can tell that you love her from the look in your eyes son
She's the rose of the desert in old Mexicoâ€

And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane
Knowin' she's waitin' and I can't get there
God only knows that I wracked my brain to try and find a way
To reach that woman in old Mexico

And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane
Knowin' she's waitin' and I can't get there
God only knows that I wracked my brain to try and find a way
To reach that woman in old Mexico

And I dream in the morning she brings me water
I dream in the evening she brings me wine
Just a poor man's daughter from Puerto Penasco
Evangelina in old Mexico Evangelina I love you so

Love it! I remember years ago (60's) the red light district was called Hollywood (maybe one building?) - I was never shown where it was and wasn't even suppose to even know it existed. One afternoon I wandered into Hector's cantina and was immediately hussled into the store room. Turns out there was one of the girls from Hollywood there with a man and it wasn't considered proper for me to be in the same room. Of course I was curious as to what she looked like (I hadn't payed any attention when I walked in) but wasn't allowed to peak and she was hussled out immediately. Maybe she was Evangelina!

Would love to hear Scotty McCleery of American Idol sing it.

Where was it located back then? The last location was up off Samuel Ocana...a friend of mine showed it to me back about 5-6 years ago>
