In a couple of weeks I will be taking my daughters up to the Phoenix airport - my car has Mexican plates. Do I buy one day insurance for the states? Do they sell it at the border?

Yes and yes or buy it in Penasco. There are several locations selling in in Sonoyta. Portugal used to have the kiosk in the middle of hte road. Bet Ms. Glover sells it.
