Well here is a story with a few blanks in it for you to look into.Pictured is the remaining parts of a Grumman F6-f that crashed at Santo Tomas in 1942.The whole story is shrouded in mystery and I learned another fact today..( well a really good story). Old man in pickup drives by and stops by plane...he tells me his father rescued the pilot the night it crashed...the pilot told him they bombed a German sub 20 miles out and crash landed after running low on fuel.He then told me the old German The place called Germans Point is named after was on the sub....interesting stuff then I found this http://the-wanderling.com/hoover_dam.html

Cool story about the attempted Hoover Dam attack. I like reading about stuff like this our government covers up. It would make a great movie! The explanation about the Hellcat is priceless. I remember the story about it being on a training mission out of Imperial Beach. Apparently a lot more to it than that. It appears there was a lot going on in the Sea of Cortez during WWII, and the following wasn't done without reason.

"Worlds away on December 7 1941, Japan's attack on the United States Pacific Naval Fleet & the city of Honolulu,Hawaii would soon affect Peñasco's future.

Ajo Arizona quickly became the site of a military base & buildup as a military airfield & major supply-distribution center. Within days the State of Arizona & Pima County signed an agreement to build a paved highway from Ajo to Lukevile,Arizona. Construction began almost overnight.


The United States Government 'secured' Puerto Peñasco's harbor as a "Joint Contingency Plan" for part of its pacific naval fleet. The agreement included the U.S. Military building a military dock area in the harbor & a 65 mile paved highway from Lukeville,Arizona to Puerto Peñasco. (Note:The U.S. Military still has an agreement to use the highway 'when necessary'...)"
