How does this happen at 130pm in the afternoon?! Fall asleep in the middle of the day? How hard is it to keep a vehicle in it's lane? SMH I don't understand how these things happen...

Very aggressive driving, risky passing hoping the other guy will chicken out. I drove to Ajo last week and kept the speed limit +5. I consistently had 5 to 10 vehicles stacked up so I sped up a bit. In Mexico it was worse. trucks hauling trailers passing me at 75MPH.. Lunacy.

Risky passing and speed. Driving south last month, we kept to the speed limit. We weren't in a hurry and we got passed by.......everybody.
Especially between Aho and the border. Twice, two trucks tried to pass and almost got whacked by oncoming cars. Same thing when we left the Sonyota city limits. Everybody passed us. Mostly Arizona plated vehicles. I have actually heard people say that its pretty much ok to "open it up" between Sonyota and Puerto P. I don't. Not in a hurry. Drove to the border 2 weeks ago to pick up some friends. Same thing on the way back to Rocky Point. Everybody passed us . Most people believe they can judge the speed of an oncoming vehicle, but I believe very few can do it accurately and all you have to be wrong is once .

If you dont have your head up your ass then 80 is reasonable on the stretch from Sonoyta to PP.... conversely, if you're going 55 or 60 on that stretch I'd argue you're the problem... depth perception and rate of change is certainly a factor many times and coming up on someone going 50 or 55 on that stretch is just as much of a problem. I know you're going to tell me that the speed limit is 55 and I understand but Americans aren't used to driving 50 mph on a wide open stretch of highway. There are city streets in phoenix that it's legally permissible to drive 50 mph so going 70mph on a stretch of highway IMHO is not reckless or dangerous. Distraction and honestly, just being an overall newb is my main concern. I once knew a girl that I watched driving her vehicle in front of me try to make a pass just N of PP and my first thought was what is this dumb ass doing?! You could clearly see there wasn't enough distance to make the pass stick and further more, rate of change at 75 mph happens fast.... needless to say this dumb ass girl literally ran out of room and decided to go onto the shoulder of the south bound traffic to avoid collision... mind you that's the shoulder on the other side of the road with her going N!!! LIKE WTFFFFFFFFFFF?! Then again, I've been around motorsports and riding dirtbikes since I was 8 so naturally I'd believe I'm a little more in tune and skilled behind the wheel than most. Regardless, I do agree that the passing situation has been getting worse. Towing the jetski the last few trips I have seen some passing that made me sick... mostly NEWBS with big motors thinking they're big JOHNSON and are just overall idiots in over their heads...

At only 50MPH if something happens-a blowout, swerving to miss something, sudden braking.....you are not going to recover. Every mile an hour faster increases the odds of death & dismemberment. It usually is the cocksure ignorant who are driving fast and passing.

And all of this is part of the overall problem. We each bring our own attitude about driving with us wherever we go. Good or bad. Then add the rest of the drivers to the mix and their driving skills, lack of driving skills, attitude, haste and finally maybe add a little alcohol to ease the ride. Who knows. This accident happened in the U.S. and without seeing the accident , I can only offer an educated guess at what might have happened. Cross the border and now were dealing with a foreign country, foreign drivers and their own set of driving habits. I've lived and driven in several foreign countries and 15 years driving to Rocky Point. This kind of stuff happens everywhere.

Sold are vacation house in Phoenix relocated to Las Conchas. In the process of moving 2300 miles from Canada to PP loaded our furniture and all our belongings into a 26 foot trailer and left Phoenix for PP . Eight miles from Las Conchas some pile of crap figured 75 MPH wasn’t fast enough and decided to pass. Long story short you couldn’t fit a pencil between all 3 vehicles. Drove 2300 miles through snow fog, rain and ice dodging deer and whatever Mother Nature could throw at us only to have some twenty something punk almost take us out. I will never forget that day or spot on the highway.

I have a power woman friend who dries 90 everywhere she goes on the highway-completely oblivious to the danger and cocksure ignorant about her skills or the situations she puts everyone in. I have told her that we will no longer ride with her as a driver. One more thing, I taught my boys they can race their dirt bikes as fast and hard as they want once they get to the track, the vehicle we ride to the track in is for safe commutes which means obeying the laws and that people who speed and take chances on the highways are weaklings who could never physically do it on a track. I think this line of thought worked.

If you do the math how much faster do you get to PP doing 80 MPH compared to 55 MPH. Not really worth it when you sit down and think about it.

If a person isn’t prepared to give up a 1 hour and 36 minutes of their life. They shouldn’t have been given the gift of life in the first place. I would like to thing my life your life anyone’s life is worth more than 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Sammy Hagar had it right. It really is hard to drive 55 as it feels like I could get out of the car and run along side it at that speed. That said, it's simply about driving to match the conditions. I might hit 80 on some long wide open stretches with little traffic. I slow down though in the areas with curves and limited visibility, as well as in the minefield (pothole) areas. Some unfortunately just seem to lack common sense though.

The other factor besides speed that increases risk is the tendency of many people to like to congregate in a very fast moving line. I absolutely hate someone riding my ass. I will slow down and ride the edge of the road to let them pass. Had one ruck riding my ass so I slowed down and drifted to the right. No oncoming traffic, long straight stretch. He just refused to pass till I got down to 40 MPH. I will drive fast but only on an open road with none near.

They're the "Followers", not man enough to go it on their own, trying to use you as their front door. Little do they know the cop usually pulls over the second car!!

You are not even close and good luck driving that fast in the states. I was pulled over last month and given a warning ticket for driving 69MPH in a 65MPH zone. All of the speeding and "time saving" I may have done on ALL of the previous trips during the past 12 months was eaten up in the 49 minutes I sat on the side of the road with the officer.
I once had a blowout with my cruise set at 50MPH. Thank god it was my right front and not my left front tire because I drifted off the road and not in to the heavy oncoming traffic. Brand new Michelin tires did nothing to protect my family inside. I happened to be driving exactly the speed limit but had I been driving your "80" MPH I maybe would have rolled and most certainly would have had much more damage.
