I don't really care how I get there....just as long as I get there.
Yes and no.

Sonoyta can be a complete logjam at times. Especially American holiday weekends. I haven't seen the plans for the bypass, so I don't know what the true option is that's being considered. However, consider the truck traffic through town alone. I see two possible scenarios here: 1) build a bypass so that traffic on 2 can pass south of town and pick up 2 to the west of town. Heck, Phoenix has needed the same thing for years - a way to route through traffic on 1o south of the city to rejoin existing 10 out west by Buckeye somewhere, instead of through the center of downtown. 2) Build a new border crossing west of Sonoyta that connects to the current main highway south just outside of town. That's an expense for both sides of the border.

As was said, I've been across both crossings at Nogales and no way in hell would I ever take the DeConcini crossing downtown Nogales again. Mariposa is busy, but it's got lots of lanes and they move pretty quickly. I'm always headed further south when I go that way, so I don't miss the huge traffic jam that it is Nogales.

I don't think it has anything to do with "hiding the poverty" at all. Plain ol' efficiency in getting from point A to point B and back. It would be welcome!

By passes are convenient but they have gutted the flavor of traveling, making all roads look the same, killing off local flavor businesses in town and creating plaza opportunities for big companies like the Outlet Malls. Sterilized door to door travel where everything looks the same !! Blech !!:eek::eek:

Gimme a break here. Sonoyta is a small town and yes sometimes it slows traffic a little but a complete logjam ?? The border stop acts in effect to distrubute traffic out over time as it releases vehicles. It's the first flavor of Mexico after crossing the border and should not be passed over to rush visitors to the artificial atmosphere high rise condos or the Mayan Palace.

Maybe an over pass at 3 and one way loop using existing roadways through town would work to smooth out traffic and and keep the atmosphere.

The new road down is to be built by the Mayan folks and will serve them well but not Penasco.

I look forward to someday driving on the Mayan road- it will probably take an additional 20 minutes off our trip to Miramar but who knows when that will be a reality.
Miramar,Sasabe with bridges across the washes is coming so figure from Tucson a hour to the border,a hour from Sasabe to Caborca and maybe two hours to Miramar

That's the same time as now- and I'm nervous about Sasabe (but also now about Sonoyta!) But the tacos are better in Sonoyta- El Serape, so we'll keep going that way.

If they just eliminated the payment beggars that spring up coincidentally on busy weekends as you exit Sonoyta that would keep traffic moving.

It is just the one Arm man that used to wash your window did not mind that but the Old women who almost walks out in front is too much, but I don't think they slow traffic that much.

That woman scares me if I don't give her money- I think she's casting an evil spell the way she looks at me! My husband jokes and says she's the one who lives in the big house on the hill across from the Pemex.

Hate is too strong of a word for me. Dislike and dont trust for sure. I think he's a fraud. What's a waitress or so in the scheme of things anyway. Lots of them around.
