Sea of Cortez Grouper- population and biology research and resources

Very Interesting! Thanks, Robert! I thought the http://cmbc.ucsd.edu/People/Students/aburto/Ciencia_y_Conservacion_Vol2008No1_eng.pdf publication was especially enlightening. I learned the names for two types of fish that I have previously caught and up until now baffled me. I have caught a...

    Big Roosterfish-Sea of Cortez w/lots o' pics

Way to go Vince! Beautiful photos of those roosters. They are still on my bucket list of fish to catch some day. My wife and I took the dirt road of insanity in 2004. It's 35 miles of some of the worst driving I've ever seen. Too bad you didn't know about the new highway and short bypass...

report for 7-16 on the reel hard

Thanks for the report! I'm glad to hear that your boat is running well. Maybe we'll see some fishing reports again. Which boat were you using? Man, that had to hurt when you saw the broken hook. I guess it had to be a real badass grouper. Are you going to try to clean up the rod and reel...

    Funky Fish

Wow, those are some great pictures! Whereabouts were they taken? I used to snorkel a lot from shore years ago, but never saw sealife like that in your photos. It reminds me of what I've seen in the Caribbean or South Pacific. Very nice, thanks!

La Pinta - Shore Fishing 7-4-2011

Ed - Great story! I have never fished La Pinta, but spent many days shore fishing near The Reef before I bought a boat. I think the oddly colored bass or grouper you caught is a Panamic Graysby http://mexfish.com/fish/pngrays/pngrays.htm and the silver leaping fish could possibly have been a...

    Fish Stories - June 7 to 9 (Post #3)

Tue June 7th – Aaronn returned to Phoenix on Monday night and Dave also made a trip to Phoenix, so I decided to fish all by myself in Lobos. I now knew how, when and where to fish and was determined to be fishing at the Glory Hole when low tide occurred. I started fishing the 18 mile reef and...

    Fish Stories - June 5th & 6th (Post #2)

Sun June 5th – Dave and I made our first trip to Lobos at 5 am that morning. We found Arturo the boat launcher in the morning and had no problems at all getting the boat in the water. We stopped at the first point for bait and found huge schools of 2 foot long Mexican Barracudas that were...

Fish Stories - May 28th to June 4th (Post #1)

All - I’m back working now in Abu Dhabi, but wanted to write about a great vacation I spent fishing in Rocky Point. It was very successful as I was able to see a lot of our good friends, the weather was good, and the boat ran well. It will be the last time I can fish down in Rocky Point for...

    Fishing Tournament

I found your poster online here: http://www.rockypointevents.net/2011/4th-deep-sea-fishing-tournament/ Just 3 more weeks and I'll be down fishing again. This time for 15 days in a row. I should have some time to find some fishy hide outs, eat fish tacos, drink XX, and experience Circus...

Who wants to go fishing tomorrow? (Sat the 22nd)- I have room for one more

Good luck Robert! I think the seas will be decent for you. If you are fishing the deep reefs, make sure to try some whole fresh dead sardines suspended about 6' off the bottom, in addition to the squid rigs. Either that or some chrome jigs, as the WSB should be moving in soon. I caught 7...

    Pemex Fuel Dock?

Correct. The 5pm closing at the fuel dock is a deal breaker for me. I used to keep my boat in the slip at Safe Marina and use their gas cart to top off the tank, but it was more trouble than it was worth. It's cheaper to launch every day ($15) than to keep your boat in the slip ($20) anyway.

Question about anchoring on the deep reefs

Robert - Very impressive anchor. Nice job! I think you're my new go to guy for welding jobs... I have owned a couple of Mighty Mite anchors and don't recommend them. I have found that the aluminum tongs bend far too easily for use in moderate wind or current. Also, the tongs wear out and...

    Puerto Penacso Storage facility

I'm sad to hear about the death of Joe Dennis. My condolensces to his family and friends. I heard a few months ago that his cancer was terminal. I have stored my boat at his facility for the past few years. Does anyone have contact information for the new owner or Anchor Storage?

Question about anchoring on the deep reefs

Hi Robert - When anchoring on the reefs, you should use as little scope as possible without breaking loose. You will need a minimum of 400' and preferrably up to 600' of rope and at least 20' of chain. I need a new rebar anchor for my boat. If you want to make two, I'll buy one from you when I'm...
