    Close spots?

I caught a nice-sized pinto bass on a Sabiki rig while making bait no more than 1/2 mile out of Cholla Bay. Took me by surprise! So, you don't have to go very far if you just want to catch some fish. You can catch lots of triggers and sand bass over the rocky spots just outside the bay. They're...

Most endangered mammals in the world are near Puerto Penasco

Re: Most endageresd mamals in the world are near Puerto Penasco I think I ate one once. (kidding, of course!) I have spent a lot of time on the water and have never seen a vaquita. I've looked for them, too. With only 200-300 still in existence (if that), chances of actually seeing one are...

    Launching in the harbor

You should try launching/recovering at San Felipe sometime. Aye, aye, aye! Damn near rolled my old boat on the beach trying to get it on the trailer over there. Open water, no protection at all from the afternoon winds. I know Cholla is great to launch from, with one exception: I don't want my...

    Launching in the harbor

That's one of the reasons I stopped using the public harbor. Everybody has their hand out. I haven't launched there in over a year now, since the new hotel construction was seriously underway. It just got too tight in there for my boat and trailer, expecially on busy weekends. Whether the...

Anyone been doing any fishing lately?

Bill - you can make bait anywhere just outside the main harbor. The point I mentioned is the point where Penasco rock (the one with the big white golf ball radar on top) points out to the sea and separates the Malecon from the Mirador beaches. It would be a bit to your north if you launch at...

Bringing my boat to San Carlos

I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives in Penasco for local calls. I have T-Mobile here in the US and my account works in Mexico (a GSM phone). Unfortunately, it's $1.59 a minute for International roaming.

    Breathalyzer

Given 'Mexican Engineering' at its best, this scares me to death. One beer and I bet that sucker will read 3.5 or something. Probably old Intoxilyzer breath meters donated from the U.S. because they've been beaten in court so many times.

Bringing my boat to San Carlos

Jim - the fishing in Penasco is excellent right now. No need to go to San Carlos anyway. The water is always bluer on the other side of the sea...

    Bad luck weekend!

Wowsers! I'm glad my evil twin is already dead or something and not out there causing problems like that for me! A guy I used to work with had the same problem - someone with the same name that was a very, very bad guy. The bad guy had assumed his identity. He got used to the handcuffs everytime...

Anyone been doing any fishing lately?

Fished Sunday and Monday. Water was great Sunday, a little iffy Monday with some large rollers (4-5 ft.) out in the middle. No wind to speak of and no white caps, just residual rolling waves out of the northwest. We cruised at 32 mph going out and 42+ coming back in. Lots of bait around - we...

    Crossing 11/3

Crossed yesterday 11/04 at about 10:00 am. One car in front of me. Saw several groups of bikes heading down already. The only problem with crossing with no lines? I have to get the one agent that is a total power/control freak who has nothing better to do at the moment but try to make me...

Bringing my boat to San Carlos

If I was towing from PP to SC, I'd go back up to Sonoyta, then take Mex 2 south. The road to Caborca has some big dips and vados and is pretty rough (and definitely narrow) in some places. I wouldn't tow my boat that way. A smaller boat might be fine.

    GOOD NEWS!!

Is this a good news/bad news thing? The good being that all it is well with you... and the bad being that we'll be seeing more pictures of the fish scarin' outfit in the future? ;) All kidding aside, I'm *very* glad to hear this Kenny!

Bringing my boat to San Carlos

Kelney is right - you *definitely* need the Temporary Import Permit and on the water liability insurance. If you plan on taking Mex 2 down from Sonoyta to Santa Ana, I don't think there is an Aduana stop (it's at 21km just south of Nogales), so you'll only need it for the marinas. Figure on...

    Santo Tomas fish camp crab

Jerry - were the crabs any good? Just curious. Being of East Coast origin, I grew up catching and eating blue crabs out of the bay in Maryland. Nothing is better! One trip to Rocky Point, I saw they had live blue crabs at the fish market and bought a couple dozen. I was extremely disappointed...

    Maps

Previous post is correct, all of the Sea of Cortez data is antique from surveys done many years ago. Get the FishNMap for Northern Sea of Cortez. At $8, it's more detailed and accurate than any of the electronic chips. You can figure waypoints where you might want to go from the map, then plug...

    Sally Arrested for Public Urination

Tyler and I both have moderator rights. As far as people posting what they want, I have no problem with that. About the only time you'll see me step in is when the name-calling starts getting out of hand. Like I said, take that crap to Private Message. When a forum user - be it you, Happy...
