Back in the mid 80's when I wanted to get away I would cut through a place in the fence and drive up to the top of the dunes on the north end of La Pinta estuary and then we would walk down from there. We could be there all day and not see anyone, even on a weekend. There was a old beat up palapas there at the time and it was from under it that I took this picture after a big tide had turned... Look Ma, no Mayan Palace.

Years later and right after they opened up the free zone I was off to try to find another "get away" going south and that's when I found Santo Tomas before I ever knew Jerry. Janice and I never actually made it to the Las Dunas community, but we were very close to it on that first trip and drove through the Ejido, Alvaro Obregon. We were dismayed that they had to put in dirt speed bumps for the ugly Americans, but delighted with the Ocotillo blooming fences. The door had been opened and my search was on.
