Driving to Nogales

I have offered to drive and take a family to Nogales Mexico the end of the month so their their 3 year old daughter can see a specialist. From Rocky Point which is the best route to take, I have a Ford F-250? We are planning on leaving early in the morning and returning that afternoon. Besides the typical paperwork, passport, FM3, registration, insurance, etc. is there anything else I should have? How long is the trip each way? Can anyone recommend a good breakfast and lunch place along the way? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, just so I have it straight. (Looking at Google Maps.)
From RP take Hwy 37 south through Caborca to Altar. A few months ago I went that direction when I went to Puerto Lobos but did not go to Caborca.
Then take Federal Hwy 2 east to Hwy 15.
Then Hwy 15 north to Nogales.

Where is the toll located? What is the cost? Pesos only? Will it be the same coming back?
At Altar there is a Hwy 43 that goes north to Nogales. It is shorter but smaller road any thoughts?

In October I’m going to San Carlos (from Phoenix) for the weekend scuba diving so it will be interesting to see Hwy 15 going south out of Nogales.

Dan... I have taken the bus to Nogales and it was actually a nice and comfortable ride... cheap too... you might want to look into that option...

Thanks, thats good to know. I would like to drive just so that I can be on my own time schedule and go where I want. What route does the bus take and how long does it take?

Dan the toll road starts after altar.I've heard they have recently been doing some work on the truly horrible 43 but I wouldn't bet on it if you have an appointment..I think the toll was less than 40 pesos (each way) Watch your speed through Altar.....I was thinking about your truck and maybe you just should go to the hospital and eat a nice meal on your way back. Bruce has a lot of good choices on Vivacaborca

Thanks, I'm not planning on leaving my truck very far from me. I have an alarm with a paging system and it has an ignition kill but the best thing is to use common sense. I was thinking late lunch in Caborca so I will check it out.

I think Reggies is open at 7 am but not sure, if they are open try their Steak mexicano burrito, mmm mmmm mmmmmm!!!! but I buy my coffee somewhere else, last time it was like dirty water!!!

Well I made the trip from Rocky Point to Nogales and back on Tuesday and I thought I would tell everyone how it went. Left at 2:00 am and arrived at 6:30 am so most of the trip was dark. They got done with the appointment about 11:00 am and we headed back stopping for lunch at one of their favorite places Kentucky Fried Chicken, lol. I thought we were going to stop at one of the many great Mexican food places they kept telling me about but since there is no KFC in RP it is a treat for them to eat there. Funny the things we take for granted. On the way back we had time so we stopped at some small towns along the way called Magdalena, Pitiquito and Caborca which had some wonderful looking churches. The roads were great with the one from RP to Caborca being the worst. There were 2 toll roads and the cost was 64 pesos and 20 pesos each way. I got a chance to see how their health care system works (I will save it for another post) how great the roads were, how beautiful this part of Mexico is and how friendly and helpful the people are. I can’t wait to start planning another trip back to some of these small towns so I can spend more time immersed in their culture.

Isn't Magdelena beautiful. So green and lush when I was there. Yes I recall the KFC, I was surprised too.
