Jeez not good for u,s, visitors and people trying to make a buck working in Sonora alike. Maybe golden bullet proof vests for the new Realtors that were just certified is in order. I was told by a hitch hiker (Realtor who's car broke down) that the condos have kept rp safe from most of the trouble because everyone has money sunk in them.A rising tide lifts all boats but a well placed bullet hole could sink them all too!

I don't have to tell anyone here how much I love Penasco. These reports disturb me greatly. Inka, you state: "is not directed to americans or tourist in general." Very true. But, as the intensity and frequency of these gun battles and direct attacks on authority figures grow, it doesn't take a crystal ball to see that it's only a matter of time before an innocent gets caught in the crossfire. I truly dread that day that a gringo family, possibly with children, gets caught up in this simply by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or perhaps they happen to be driving a vehicle similar to what the narcos are targeting (mistaken identity).

This has been my worst fear about the violence. When this inevitably happens, roll up the carpet, turn out the lights, and stick a fork in it - Penasco tourism will be done, plain and simple. I hope I do not live to see this day.

Word of the day (and what a day

Schadenfreude (pronounced /ˈʃɑːdənfrɔɪdə/ Audio (US) (help·info), German pronunciation: [ˈʃaːdənˌfʁɔʏdə]) is pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.[1] This German word is used as a loanword in English and some other languages

From a commenter on the border reporter:

We were driving into Rocky Point at about noon on Friday 6/18, and we passed 3 black vehicles on the side of the road pulling out large machine guns from the back of an older model jeep cherokee around kilometer 82. I called the emergency 066, and told them about it. A few minutes later the black vehicles came flying around us chasing newer model white vehicles (all suv’s or trucks). Later that evening we told a restaurant owner we know what we saw, and he happened to see the same thing, but later on around 3:30. He also saw them dragging someone out of one of the vehicles. He turned around and headed back to Sonoyta, but they came charging up behind him, then passed him, so he turned back around and headed to Rocky Point.
I couldn’t believe what I saw, and never have been so scared!
We later heard that 3 or 4 bodies had been found in the desert. Our neighbor in Rocky Point heard that the men we saw may have been undercover federales. Anyone else hear that rumor?

Coming back to AZ Firday the 18th I saw a white ford truck riddeled with bullet holes at a store OXXO I believe and what appeared to be a body next to it. It was by the Arizona Supermarket about 7 miles from the Lukeville checkpoint. Federales where on the scene. Scary all the same...

Sounds like you drove past the OXXO shop where the 3 unfortunate men were shot that day. The Ford truck had over 80 bullet holes in it. So sad.

Highway from Sonyota to Rocky Point we saw a shot up Blue Jeep grand cherokee. Had bullet holes in the back of the vehicle and on the driver side. Cops all over, the road was not closed we made it to our resort just fine. After hearing about the shooting on Saturday night with the police chief we will NOT return to RP!

Thats too bad you are not coming back to RP anymore. This had had nothing to do with you! It was crime it was bad yes but it is not unique to Mexico......When you find a place that is crime free please forward that info to all of us, till then.

Colorado,
We lost a police officer 2 weeks ago. We have lost many police officers over the years. This happens a lot here in the states. Why is it different in Mexico? If you stay in the tourist areas and don't go looking for trouble, your chances of getting shot are negligible. I have 45 years in Rocky Point and I am not scared yet. Please come back. It's beautiful!!!!!

It does NOT happen in the states all the time!

When did you last hear a police chief and his security escort were ambushed in the US? Full auto machine guns, vehicles riddled with 80 plus gun shots, hospitals held captive while assailants finish the job of killing the patient that was just brought in from the street shootout, and the list is growing by the day!

By comparison the shootings that happen here in the valley of how many million people? And of these shootings in the Phoenix metro area how many of them involve automatic weapons?

The loss of police officers life’s here have mainly been a lone shooter not involved in a drug cartel. Much of the crime here that involve large quantity of drugs and human smuggling is spill over that has roots from south of the border.

Guaranteed that many will still dispute these facts and just suggest to others to dawn their rose colored glasses when crossing the border and all will be fine because the members of the drug cartels would not purposely kill a visitor. No longer is it a matter of if it will happen as it is now when it will happen.

Until the situation across the border changes drastically no one can continue to claim that Rocky Point, Sonoyta, or the road between them is safe.

Well said AZ Miguel.

In addition, usually the suspects are caught within hours if not days.

Well....I guess I'm going to do some of my own rambling....

I've been going to Penasco for about 25 years now.....I love it there.....mainly because I love the ocean and the stress relief it gives me. I've also made some great friends over the years down there. I hate California....the other possible source for my stress relief....the water is too cold, it takes twice as long for me to get there, and it will cost me 3 times as much to play. And yes, I don't live there permanently, or have a heavy investment in Penasco(like a house or condo)....I'm one of the trailer trash.....so it makes it easy to "cut and run" without losing my shirt (this was for the benefit of Rosy, Mexicoruss and a few others). I can respect your opinions and your reasons for staying, but please respect mine, and don't try to poo-poo them because of the reasons you may have for staying.

I also am not much of a believer of the concept that if it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Maybe it's true, but I'm not going to intentionally walk in front of a bus or into the middle of a narco war.

Statistically, the violence in Penasco may not be anywhere near what we see in Phoenix or Tucson, but the type of violence that we've seen in the past week or so is something that we don't experience. Just look at the police fatalities that we've had the past year or so.....how quickly were the shooters apprehended? How many of our police chiefs have been targeted? At least in Phoenix, I have a pretty good idea of what parts of town to avoid, at least if I'm not armed. Yeah, there are gang type shootings, the occasional road rage shooting, but for the remainder of the homicides, usually the people involved know each other in some way. In Penasco, the shootings have not occurred in what I would consider "seedy" areas. One last year was in the Vina del Mar parking lot, and then the target was finished off in the clinic. Another was on the main drag right ouside the bank (Calle 13/Benito Juarez). The police chief was shot up near where the new hospital is. So, what parts of town do I avoid? In addition, there is no possibility of being armed when in Mexico. As someone mentioned, a bullet doesn't go around another target to get to it's intended victim. Eventually, if this continues or escalates, some innocent bystanders will be hit....be it locals or tourists. It's inevitable when several shooters are firing automatic weapons like an AK-47. The bullets will eventually ricochet or go thru some walls or vehicles and hit an "unintended" victim (as if killers fire "discriminantly" trying to avoid "innocent bystanders")!!!

I've got a couple of friends in Penasco that I've been in touch with the past week.....asking them some specific questions. One is married to a Mexican lady who has contacts in the police department. I haven't heard anything back from him. The "no news" is what is disconcerting! Another friend wrote back to say that even the local mob bosses were upset about the police chief shooting. Are they upset about losing business in their legitimate businesses, are they upset that someone else is muscling in, or are they upset that they may have some rogue elements that they can't control? We've heard that the police chief is relatively new, but no one has shed any light as to why he was possibly targeted. Was he applying pressure on someone? Was he supporting some faction of the narcos and another faction decided to make him an example?

So, I'm not writing off Penasco....yet! I'm taking a wait and see attitude to see how things develop and play out. I'm hoping to be down over the 4th for a long weekend. But I'm also not going to put on some rosy (sorry!!!) colored glasses or stick my head in the sand and say everything is back to being peachy keen!!!
