New Stuff in Penasco

Not to sidetrack the thread, but another new thing is that Wrecked at the Reef has taken over ( has signs up anyway) the upper level bar above the Giro place at the endo of Calle 13 near Maxs and the Del Sol Hotel.

Also the Bistro on Fremont near Sinaloa across from Don Julios has sadly closed. Was a nice coffee shop, no views but nice patio.

The Mexican Americans new and old in Tucson has embraced coffee. The big chains didn't go into the South side for a while and now they are the best money makers...a social people needs places to hangout. In Caborca bike culture and coffee culture are both booming.Sad to hear that one closed Roberto.I may be getting hired to refinish some high end concrete counters in Puerto Vallarta this spring and plan on going to some of those shade grown plantations near San Blas. Roberto sell that damn house and help me out!

That Beach Bum place is in the Malecon, the old Palapa Lapa and Wrecked location. The new Wrecked signs are up at the end of Calle 13, upstairs. Don't know if they are open there.

Wrecked at Jens place is open now. It is indeed in the old Sunset Cantina and replaces the one in the Malecon. They have their new website up, not totally complete but a good overview

My wife and I went to both the Wrecked at Jen's Joint and the Beach Bum tonight (Monday). They were very different experiences. Wrecked told us from the very second we walked in the door that it was drinks only and that food service would be coming in the next few weeks. When we inquired about something to snack on, the waiter showed us a menu from Max's (downstairs from the bar) and made an offer to get anything we wanted. Although we declined the offer, service was excellent and we will return frequently. Beer was $2.00 USD during Happy Hour (3:00-6:00). Great environment and they had both baseball and Monday Night Football on while we were there.

After leaving Wrecked, I was excited to go to Beach Bum for dinner. To be honest, it was quite the disappointment. Service was good, but the food quality was severely lacking. Page after page of their menu selections were written over by the phrase “coming soon”. $50.00 USD for three people (tacos and chile rellenos and beers) is way out of touch with reality. Upon our arrival, the waitress presented a small basket of chips and salsa. We were shocked to see a charge of $3.00 USD on our bill for something we did not ask for and that is free at almost every restaurant in the area. When we inquired about the charge we were told that several people have commented about it and that the owners have indicated "that is how we do it here". We won't return.

Wow I kind of like the location on the malecon better than the end of calle trece. Tks for the review Disney I don't think i'll be paying any amount of money for chips anywhere in any town.

An acceptable alternative:Make the totopos from scratch along with at least one specialty salsa.Fry the chips per order and charge a nominal fee.A dollar ought about do it.People will flock to you

Not a promising report. No way I would have paid for those chips. If they can do that why not just tack on a bunch of other unauthorized charges. Table rent, water, etc. They won't be open long with that kind of attitude and service.

ANOTHER new OXXO goes up on Calle 13! Net to Kinos Market, only 2 blocks from another OXXO they are blowin and goin with construction on a new store. Someone told me their goal is 50 stores in Penasco. Bye bye to the old timers. Reggies 8/12 is barely hobbling along. Can't believe that Kino's Market will survive the onslaught. Soon there will be no individuality in conveninece stores. OXXO is owned by Femsa a HUGE corporation.

On September 19th, I had the same experience there with the chips and salsa. They brought it to the table, we were starved because we just arrived and found our rental had a flood and we went for beer and a bite.
Got the check and saw the charge. I asked if it was a mistake and she said no. I told her to get a good look at my handsome face because she was never going to see it again.

You ain't kiddin'. And you know I'm a HUGE Reggies fan from way back. At least Laurie is still out front, cleans my windows, and is always glad to see me and grateful for a few pesos to help her out. She's as old as the hills, you know any backstory on her, Roberto?

Also, I wasn't going to say much about this and lord knows I've stuffed 1000's of them down my gullet, but watch out for Reggies burritos. Last trip a couple weeks ago, my son got a very bad case of the quick step. I was fine, didn't have a burrito until Sunday morning on the way home. By the time I hit Gila Bend, wham! Got me, too. Both of us had the carne. Wasn't the salsa verde, either, as I didn't put any of the verde on mine. Immodium to the rescue and all was well within a couple days. Just be warned.

I go to Reggies for all my convenience store stuff, and have for years. Usually get my beer & burritos there too. I don't go to OXXO. If we all keep going to Reggies, they will fine. I gotta get a Reggies hat! lol

Yes, Support local businesses not owned by the big corporations. Have Super Ley and Wal Mart/Sam's club closed yet? LOL.
Super Las Palmas should be re-opening next week.

We were at the Bodega yesterday after kitty litter and there were quite a few people - mostly local people.

Yep, the locals will support whoever has the lowest price, it's human nature and people sure love a deal, especially in Mexico.

I just love the cashiers at Super Ley, hardly ever smile and always rush to finish ringing it all up, Seems like corporate has a timer on them.
Yeah, I know the selection is greater at Bodega and Super Ley, But.

At Santa Fe and Super Las Palmas they always smile, even at Coppel not always though.
I can still spend more to support local stores, it isn't that much more and I get a nice smile afterwards because I feel, they appreciate my business.

Actually do most of our shopping at Super Ley. Staff is always helpful and smiling. I like their meat and produce better then some of the other places. Unfortunately they rarely have kitty litter. To be honest, I don't think we have gone anyplace in Penasco where we haven't been treated beautifully.

I know nothing about Laurie other than when she gets a few dollars she heads to the casino. She had or has that daughter that had a baby within the past year. They used it like a prop to get more money. Poor thing would be laying out there in the heat and sun all day long. Have not seen the daughter or baby for weeks now. I never gave her a centavo after I discovered the casion action.

Too bad about the 8/12 Burrito situation. You already know it's typical when business is slow that food gets used and served that should be discarded. I've noticed that the heater in the display case is not always working as they are sometimes not hot, warm but not hot as they probably should be. You might tell Bill Abeita about it. He runs it right now. Frankly I have no hope for Reggies, unless Mr. Big pours money into it.

Side note. Across Fremont a Taco place opened up some time back. Across from the Combo Taco mas o minus. They were open for several months with virtually no business. Now a really nice young couple that got xed out of the US have opened it again but the same story, NO CLIENTE. I've thought about eating there but I'm afraid of the food !! They have to have the ingredients on hand to make the food but how long will it keep? A few days or so. Sad but true.
