Just in from the "Associated Press", ain't that a hypocritical pile of hogwash for the use of the word "press"! Associated with what? The CCCP?

"As of today the Mexican government officially abandoned the policy of maintaining the policy of maintaining a fishing-free zone around the last 10 or so remaining vaquita marina"

The entire Upper California Zero Tolerance Zone is now open to all fisheries.

If the upcomming shrimpie season is still to be allowed on all months with the letter "R" this coming September should be a banner record breaker in tonalades. I'll have my order with Jessie for at least 100 lbs. of los Camarones Tigres Azul Monstros tomorrow.

I'll be gearing up for a run in October out to Roca Consag to wet a line in plans to get a few Giant Wolf Eeels to sizzle on my barbie.

Later,

JJ

https://earthleagueinternational.org/operation-fake-gold/. Good rundown of the trade that has doomed them.It is interesting that Jim backs the Socialist president of Mexico now allowing the Gill nets to make a comeback so he gets the working mans vote......in a way though this was a losing fight from the get go..As the hippies say in the above story the fight should have been against the Chinese middle men.....on the shrimp issue its farmed for me for a while.I agree with the U of A scientists....side note while looking to buy ex forum member Jerry’s house in Santo Tomas some of his local fishermen buddies came over and drank beer with us and told us they now are free from being under cartel control for now.....they had these huge big blue shrimp that even Red Jerry couldnt pass up...I ( a resistance republican) couldn't either but am working on it....didn't buy at ST but it is nice....https://www.desertmuseum.org/center/sonorensis_seafood.pdf

Basically the Mexican government wants the Vaquita to go extinct. It'd make things a whole lot easier for them.

For what it's worth, JJ... Jessie had trouble getting us 10 lbs of big blues last weekend. We asked for 50. He said shrimp catch is down over 60% from last year. Couple of things come into play here. Lack of decent shrimp available and that Amlo killed the diesel subsidy for the shrimpers, so there's fewer boats out there right now trying to catch them. Add to that that the US has more or less banned import of Mexican shrimp due to the fleets not using the right TED (Turtle excluder device) which cuts even more into profit.

Not necessarily a doom sayer here, but the shrimping industry as a whole in Mexico is near collapse.

Hey Stu,

We did get our ten pounds of giant blues last Saturday the 30th. Just a matter of stopping at Jessie"s and placing my order on Thursday when we rolled into town. Had them on the barbie at my casita in Mirador Saturday night shell on, drenched in Olive Oil and slow cooked over aged Mesquite from my backyard here in Yuma.

We vac packed and froze the remainder that night and declared them at the San Luis crossing on Sunday with no gripes from the US Customs officer. That was after a FOUR HOUR wait in line! Had to deal with five road blocks with the new Guardia National all locked and loaded and ready for any kind of action. Those guys are professional not the fat grinning criminals in the blue uniforms that set up their impromptu ripoff stations anywhere along the Coastal Hwy.

Yeah, we placed order on Friday. As said, was only 10 lbs we could get. Might have even been last season's, but still great skrimps.

Saw the NG around in Penasco and Sonoita, but no stops anywhere.

Zero wait in Lukeville on Monday.

I stopped by Jesse's today to pick up some large browns, we spoke and he repeated what Stu said.
I read that 1/3 of the fleet wasn't allowed out on opening day for shrimping. Jesse said the boat captains are
hearing the season might be shut down right after New Year due to the low shrimp counts being caught that way
hopefully the numbers can try to recover, but the Gov't needs to ban what happened last season.

Last April/May when there were hundred's of Panga's going out illegally north of Black Mtn and catching
lot's of huge shrimp but also caught many pregnant females which has hurt this seasons numbers.
I was told this was a Cartel sponsored event.

I've said it for years and I'll say it again here -- when it comes to any kind of conservation issue, Mexicans are their own worst enemy. The younger generation believes in this issue, but for the most part, the general attitude is I'm getting mine before it's all gone. I've seen it in so many ways from getting angry over releasing a billfish or juvenile fish, to being challenged by pangas for cutting turtles off illegal long lines. As far as enforcement by the government, it's a joke.

It's a mindset. I was riding my bike in Las Conchas last week and the beer cans were everywhere, WTF? who throws a beer can out the window?

Beer cans everywhere? Mostly locals, I'm sure also some Americans. I am really surprised by their careless trash ideas.

Our place in Cholla Bay has an empty lot in front which is great for sunsets and access to shore fishing.
The locals are there almost every night, the next morning there are 10-25 beer cans/bottles, usually cans because
the cost less in the stores.

They also leave their food boxes and bags there. We left out a trash can for them to use a few years back,
about 1/2 of the people used it, then a few months later it was stolen and it was cabled up to a block wall.

We're seriously thinking of putting boulders in to block the access to the lot, but that would keep lot's of people
from enjoying one of the last places in Cholla where people can get close to the water which isn't blocked off yet.

We live in Playa Encanto. By FAR the greatest generated of trash and litter here are tourists. We have a huge problem with coyotes this year due in large part by people not picking up trash or just leaving outside in plastic bags.

There are a lot of Mexican nationals renting in Las Conchas now. Way more than before. Get the oomp pa pa music at 3 am way more often. Seems to coincide with the beer can issue. At least it's recyclable aluminum so some enterprising individual will pick it up.

i agree. And it’s hard to say this because it is their country after all, but the Mexican national renters are ruining Las Conchas in my opinion.

For the reasons mentioned prior, and also that if a 3 bedroom rental has a max occupancy of 9, they will put 19 in there. I have seen them even pitch tents in the yard on the beach side and sleep in there in order to fit more people at the same house. Then instead of 2 cars parked in front with a normal 2 family renter, they have like 7-8 vehicles for one house.

loud music day and night, leave trash and bud light cans everywhere, diapers, etc. It’s a joke.

The guard gate not being monitored anymore has exacerbated all of this. It’s a serious problem and a real bummer for those who have enjoyed staying and/or living in Las Conchas for decades.

Did I mention the estuary now is more like a racecar derby and daytime campground?
The days of serenity out there are long gone.

Very sad
