The Homeport...A reason a week it is a bad idea

Great summary http://www.cruiseshipsinsavannah.com/major-issues-pollution.html

"A cruise ship moored at a terminal runs its engines 10-12 hours a day. That's because it must power an enormous set on on-board systems to serve the 2500-3000 people a typical vessel that would call at Savannah supports. The fuel burned by cruise ships is the worst--that is, the most polluting and damaging to health--you can choose. The cruise lines us it because it's cheap. It's cheap, of course, because the cruise corporations that own the ships don't have to pay for the sickness their exhausts create.

The World Health Organization officially classifies diesel as a carcinogen as of 2012, but the health risk isn't limited to cancer.

Studies point to the localized effects of diesel air pollution. The closer people are to the source of the pollution, the greater their risk for serious health problems because of the particle pollution in diesel soot. Particle pollution causes things like asthma, asthma attacks, heart attacks, and premature death.

Soot from diesel may be more toxic than particle pollution from other dangerous sources. Studies indicate that particulate pollution from mobile combustion sources increases daily mortality three times as much as the particulate pollution from coal. Experts say the more damaging effects are likely because fresh diesel exhaust contains particles so small they invade lung tissue and enter the bloodstream, causing effects like cardiovascular inflammation or blood clots.

Sulfur in ship fuel also is much dirtier and more dangerous than on-road diesel. Even at the cleanest fuel standard that will be required for ships in the next few years, trucks on city streets will still be 67 times cleaner than a cruise ship running its engines in port.

What's the bottom line? A cruise terminal on the river would significantly harm the air quality in downtown Savannah. The cruise lines don't care. Neither apparently do the proponents of building a terminal in the city. The consulting study purchased by the city at their request doesn't even address the issue.

As was the case in New York City, there are ways to address the pollution and health issue. To do so, however, you need political leaders who recognize the problem, act responsibly on behalf of the public to deal with it, and listen to the facts rather than satisfy themselves with slogans before they make serious decisions like whether or not to build a terminal. Is that the kind of leadership we have in Savannah? We'll see.

Question...will there be Shoreline power? What is shoreside power and how does it work?

When a ship connects to shoreside power, it does not use its diesel engines to power the ship, but rather connects to the city's electrical grid to run its onboard systems.

After a ship docks, it's hooked up to the grid by what is essentially a large power plug; this takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Once connected, the ship's engines are then shut down until roughly a half-hour prior to departure, when the engines are restarted to prepare for departure. While the ship is plugged in, it releases hardly any fuel emissions.

Laughable at best, Jerry. Penasco struggles to keep power (and water) available to the city itself, let alone to cruise ships on a dock. Especially during the warm months, blackouts are a fairly common thing as demand soars and the AC units all whir.

The cruise ships will be better off under their own on-board systems for power. Even though they share a common border, Mexico is light years away from California when it comes to environmental regulations.

this might be a good selling point to bring the old dirty ships to our homeport..."Shoreline Power we don't need no stinkin Shoreline Power) and pull ships away from San Diego.......hell they might even have a Screw the Environment cruise where the passengers can Harpoon Whales and throw garbage on the dolphins......

so in this article, they mention the number tourists that will be brought in on a cruise ship is comparable to events such as the RPR, CM and spring break.
A few things to point out. When the events mentioned above are here, nearly everyone has some sort of transportation.
Lets just say 2000 of the passengers decide to get off the ship and explore....is there or will there be enough taxis, vans or buses to get them from port to town?
How long are they gonna stay?
When all the other events are here, they get a room. If they are in port as long as other cruises, they will not be staying at a resort.
I'm just trying to see how this will generate the same kind of revenue that the Rally, CM and Spring Break do.

We have never had any confirmation if jerry is female, male or something in between. Regardless:

Unfortunately it appears jerry and its tourist likkers, non of whom have any actual ties to Penasco, are once again spouting their diatribe to bring down our home, harm our community, decrease our property values and discourage tourists. It's sad they seem to be spiteful that we can live here, and they cannot. For a few years the best jerry has ever been able to do to educate anyone is to regurgitate some google online internet articles that suits its negative agenda. jerry hates Rocky Point and will stop at nothing to harm the city. It appears jerry believes everything it reads online, and is not capable of thinking independently, and has no hands-0n knowledge. This person has no independent or personal knowledge of which it speaks. jerry wants to stop all progress in Penasco.

I see jerry now refers to "our " homeport. jerry has never been able to live in Penasco. jerry is a drive by wannabe PPRES and it has no homeport in Penasco. it has no stake in this community.

So far jerry is a person of straw with a negative agenda, and of no positive value to our city at this point. Perhaps when jerry decides Penaso is a winner it will jump ship to become a supporter. Follow the leader, jerry !

Perro, why the Hick remark? LOL.
It's a Banjo silly. I assumed incorrectly you might have read any of the links Jerry posted or your own as well.
I read what you posted and just like anything else anyone can find the fuel to stoke their fires, good or bad, right or wrong.

What you posted was created by a Marketing and sales director. It says so at the end of the article/add.

What I referred to was part of what Jerry posted and was information studied and written by School of Maritime and Coastal Studies, Southampton Solent University. Read it, you don't have to agree with it but at least look at it. It can't hurt you and I am sure will not change your opinion on the matter and that is ok. At least look at and try to discredit what you disagree with.

Do I have an opinion contrary to yours on this subject, probably. However I do not call you names nor do I assume you are an ignorant mountain dweller that is married to your mother/cousin.

Here is the link to just one part of what was included in the information Jerry posted.

JWT, if you consider independent knowledge to be what ever pops into your head and believe with out any actual facts, one way or the other, to be more valid than others then you may want to get a second opinion.

None of the negative opinions matter anyways, it's happening one way or the other. I for one hope that this helps the peoples that have been born and raised there, you know... the "other" locals and doesn't negatively affect the ecosystem. If you consider that not caring for Puerto Peñasco then your personal motives are once again laid bare.

I think it's time for Banned Camp from this lame duck poster. The best information this poster has given us in months is where to buy fruit. PPRES is personally attacking a well known forum member without provocation. Furthermore, this poster is irrational, desperate for attention and at times childish. Almost reminds me of Happy. I would suggest that now is the time for a warning. This poster clearly has an agenda far greater than the one that IT projects onto Jerry. In addition, it is my belief that this poster has become obsessed with Jerry. The poster most likely spends night and day reading backlogs of Jerry's threads and comments. The poster obviously has made this personal. I would like to suggest another option besides banned camp...

Let's settle this the old fashioned way, the RPT.COM way! The GUA GUAS back alley brawl. Bring HOOCH and others. I will be there and we can SWING at each other and settle this VERGA measuring contest once and for all!!!!

As always...
