Mexico Beach Bum

I have no family members working at the restaurant - they are all in Montana. However, I have gotten close to my staff and there is a family atmosphere among us.
Nice to have that family atmosphere. But frequently family run places do not have the level of supervision and responsiveness needed for efficiency. Dad or mom want to be nice to the kids and are often reluctant to ask for something that might make the kids work harder. These things may be critical to the business. My observations on several evening visits are that the 'kids' who were there stay at the last table in the rear and are on the computer and or tending an infant. Nice but maybe not the best scenerio for business. The young gent at the bar is very plesant but sometimes preoccupied at the rear table. A good bartender is responsive and proactive. A customer should not have to wait to catch his eye at a distant table to order another drink, just for example. Same for wait staff. Yes it's boring standing there waiting when things are slow, but that's part of the job. It is very difficult to keep the staff energy level and responsiveness up when things are very slow. It is a good policy to not have employees congregate and socialize within sight of customers. Most customers resent it when service is a little slow. I admit I have not tried the food because it has been very uncomfortable due to the low temp.

I truely wish you well but I am not sure where ATZA ate. Her experience is very markedly different from others. If it was at your place everyone was 'on' then.

ATZA= wife or business partner? Which one is it?
No,neither my husband nor I are family members of the owner or partners. I believe it is only owned my Mike, I know not if he has a partner since we have never asked...not the kind of polite thing to ask people. It is like asking someone how much do they make and I am sure no one at least not my self would be comfortable answering to such question. We just liked the place, if you do not then too bad. I find it interesting how people do not like a place and yet they keep going there and complaining about it. :)

I don't think anyone kept going there. I think it's actually pretty generous and open minded to go back to a place a 2nd time to give it another shot after the first time was a bad experience. Three times and you're a fool.

I find it interesting that someone makes their first post on this board in defense of a place that clearly can't bring it's reputation back. Most of those who have expressed criticism have made hundreds if not thousands of posts and yet those who support this establishment are usually first time posters. The facts are what they are.

OK call me a fool !!! I like the building and when the weather was good enjoyed the deck outside. Since bahishing myself from Max's after being assaulted there I'm casting about for a new hangout. I'm more than willing to give the guy a shot at improving but not willing to be uncomfortable. He got some good info from customers here to improve things, you could call them complaints but he should be grateful to hear suggestions how to improve business. I don't have the impression that anyone wishes him ill will.

What happened at Max's?

OK, so I went back to Mexico Beach Bum to talk to Mike and tell him what happened....and its closed? I only made a comment of how bad the service was which is in line with most posters on here with a history of posting then the ones with just a couple of posts defending that means yes, the owner has multiple accounts or family helping him here. How about taking the advice of others on here and worry about your reputation through the restaurant instead of online. It was cold and you said heaters were on the way. Did they get stolen? You have to wonder why its so dead in there, regular patrons cant be wrong!

I understand that it has been sold. It could be closed during the transition.
Hope the new owners read the Forum and make some of the suggested changes in order to make it a 'favorite spot' to go when in Penasco. Wish them all the best.

That didn't last long
"Sold" seems like a generous way to say it bombed and foreclosed. I would love to know what restaurant "experience" this owner had previously. Didn't do one thing right from day one with the charging for chips. What a brillant business decision that is in Penasco. Just got worse from there. This location needs a lot of work, experience, and a good gimmick to ever be successful. Damn, it didn't even last long enough for me to get back down there for the guy to buy me a cerveza for my horrible experience on my last visit.

Exceptionally and consistently poor service. I brought parties of employees, clients, and family there and would have gladly shelled out for more food and drink than they sold us...if only they'd let me. Then they would have all come back on their own, and those they brought back with them would have. Nope.

I know I'm a relative newtimer at least as a part-time resident, but so far my standards are Wrecked and Capone's for service and overall first-rate product. El Conchal on Benito Juarez and that BYOB taco place on Sinaloa north of Fremont for local delicioso-ness. El Barco on Estero Marua for authentic coolness. Max's is good on quality of service and overall product. Bryan's out east and JJ's out west both disappointing on service quality (as was Mexico Beach Bum, as documented). But you just can't stay away from the setting and history at JJ's anyway. Rejoinders, anyone?

Agreed...... having a hard time believing it also. I think the owner of the Mexico Beach Bum should explain where their 'common practice to reuse chips' claim comes from! I also think its pretty sh**ty that they're trying to throw the other restaurants under the bus. Keep it up MBB, you'll be out of business in no time.[/QUOTE]

like I said.....and barely 4 months!

After the original bad reviews I never wanted to even try this place. Too many other "sure things" in town to waste money and time on an "iffy" place. My red flags:
1. The charging for the chip controversy - bad, bad way to start off with people, then have to apologize and try again - leaves people with a bad feeling.

2. The comment "Mike" made in response to someone's complaint about slow service: "That night we hadbeen slow all day, so I let one person go home and then later we got 4 tablesall at once which is always a challenge." Really? 4 tables at once is always a challenge? A good waiter/waitress can manage more than 4 tables at once. Aside from waiter/waitress skills, I don't want to hear excuses for the problem, just fix it.

3. The second owner "placid montana" said, when asked about his employees: "However,I have gotten close to my staff and there is a family atmosphere among us."
Nobody is saying you have to mistreat your employees, but creating a "family atmosphere" leaves you open to being taken advantage of when you're not there to keep an eye on the place. When the cat's away . . . "

Just my dos centavos.

So is it closed because it went out of business and losing money or did someone buy it and they are changing things around?
